Tragedy Day 361

Today has been a very humbling, sad, speechless, horrific and full of perspective day.

My colleague and dear friend’s husband left this world today in the worst way. Leaving behind a wife, one young son and one newly teenaged son. I spent the day with her students as she had to suddenly leave school and they were filled with worry, concern and love for their amazing teacher. They were also filled with thoughtful work, enthusiasm for learning, energy and boundless life, which I hope they will wrap her in as the year continues and the days are sad, long and hard for her.

I have taken many deep breaths, prayed with staff and parents and had many conversations today where we thought our day was bad, but it really isn’t that bad.

I ache for the decisions and difficult days, months and years ahead for my friend and her sweet boys. My heart hurts because this woman is a force. Her energy, her attitude and her spirituality blow my mind on a daily basis. Just today she secretly snuck in my classroom with a balloon, a muffin of each kind (except the bran one because, well…), a musical card and a starbucks card for my birthday. In the 5 years I have known her, I haven’t seen her greet a single day without a smile on her face and an easy go with the flow way that most of us would love to give to each day. It didn’t matter if it was a day that started lovely in her home without a fight or if it was a day where she was dealing with the brain tumor discovered on her husband’s brain that has had the entire family on a roller coaster, she always has a smile on her face and ready for the next innovative task in her classroom.

Everyone who works with her, loves her and wants to help but we don’t know what to say or do. These times are so hard because time is the only thing that heals and you can’t hurry time. None of us can lift her burden but we will stand with her as she carries this heavy boulder.

Life is sort. Savor your moments. Live in them.

Hugs, peace and love Crumpalita!
